Hispanic Heritage Month Spotlight: David Rosario Brings Culture, Community, and Heart to Sykesville

Since arriving in Sykesville nearly two years ago, David Rosario has been instrumental in enhancing the town’s cultural and community atmosphere. A native New Yorker with Dominican and Peruvian roots, David is passionate about sharing his heritage through his involvement in local events.

David’s journey to Maryland began when he met his wife, Evelyn, in Baltimore. Although rooted in New York, love led him to settle in Baltimore, where they started their life together, creating fond memories of crabbing along the Chesapeake in the late 90s. Today, they are proud parents of Greg, 23, and Ana, 16. I recently met Ana after one of her piano lessons at The Band Shoppe, a local Sykesville business, where she hones her musical talent.

In addition to his contributions to Sykesville’s events, David is also a business owner, running a successful State Farm Insurance agency in Downtown Sykesville. His commitment to the community is evident both in his professional life and in his volunteer work for local events.

At last year’s Fall Festival, David introduced a Día de los Muertos display, teaching the community about this important tradition. Children had the chance to decorate colorful skull masks, symbolizing remembrance. “It’s a way to honor those who are no longer with us,” David explains, “and sharing that with the community makes it special.”

His contributions continued at the Couture Kaleidoscope Fashion Show, where David showcased traditional dresses from Guatemala, Honduras, and the Dominican Republic. His daughter proudly wore a Dominican dress, while other models displayed stunning attire from Central and South America. “These pieces represent the rich history of our cultures,” David noted.

In the Let Freedom Ring Parade, David brought horses and riders from diverse backgrounds, including a couple with Guatemalan and Russian roots. Their captivating performance added international flair, showing David’s talent for connecting people through shared experiences.

At Sippin' on Summer, David introduced Miriam, a pupusa vendor whose food was a massive hit. Although Miriam had never sold at a festival, David encouraged her to participate. “I knew people would love it,” David shared. “Now she’s considering opening her own food business.”

Beyond events, David has been an advocate for the Latino community through his involvement with the Latino Providers Network. His dedication has ensured that Latino families feel welcomed and supported in the broader Baltimore area.

Reflecting on his journey, David says, “I didn’t set out to make an impact; it just started happening, and I’m running with it.” His presence in Sykesville has truly enriched the town, offering a greater appreciation of cultural diversity. As we celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month, we are fortunate to have someone like David who brings people together through shared culture and kindness.
