The North Carolina League of Municipalities Local Leadership Foundation (NCLM) recognized the City of Statesville’s Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) initiative during its annual conference this April held in Wilmington, NC. The City of Statesville was represented at the award ceremony by council members Fred Foster, Amy Lawton and Mayor Pro Tem William Morgan.
Statesville’s AMI initiative was recognized for its modern technology focused on improving delivery of services, citizen engagement and economic investments. The AMI project upgraded all City water and electric meters, replaced the old meters with highly accurate, secure, state-of-the art metering technology, also known as Smart Meters. The program has been in the works for more than 10 years. Nearly two years ago, the City began the installation of nearly 12,000 AMI electric meters and 9,000 AMI water meters.

Other AMI system benefits and improvements include:
- remote reading of the meters, providing information to the City automatically, on a daily basis;
- alerts the City and customers when there is a power outage and detect water leaks;
- real-time information for customer viewing through a Customer Portal, for the most accurate electric and water usage readings;
- Customers can use the portal to compare electric and water usage to weather data, making budgeting and energy-conservation more achievable.
