Preserving Art, Culture, and History: Shop Feature

Hattie & Nan's Antiques & Books

On the Adams Avenue side of 14STW, Joanna and Kathy sit inside Hattie and Nan's on a rainy day, preparing for customers to come to the store. During my Thursday visit to Joanna's shop, she was eager to show me her new cabinet, as Kathy had just finished decorating it for display earlier that day. According to Joanna, the shopkeeper, the cabinet is 1800s design that was likely made around the 1920s. As I began to nose through the cabinet, it's story began to come to life.

Within the cream-colored, wooden doors, a red metal rack sits high inside. This rack could have been designed for cooling purposes, according to Joanna, for cooling pies or fresh baked bread. While it may have been designed to make making practices easier, Joanna suggest it's modern day uses can go beyond storing freshly baked goods.

The unique baker's cabinet had a feature which is said to add rarity to the piece. While I have never seen something like this in a modern kitchen cabinet, Joanna explained this was a storage container for flour. At the bottom of the container, the open-ended part allows for a flour sifting attachment. This hidden compartment sits between the two glass-paneled doors, and adds uniqueness to the piece.

Something I enjoyed about the cabinet was that it reminded me of a kitchen cabinet my great-grandmother would have had. The metal trimming and countertop was a popular design in her house. With a little refurbishing, the rust and chipped paint on the metal trimming and counter can easily be cleaned up.

Like what you see?

This cabinet currently stands tall by the entrance inside of Hattie and Nan's, and the original price is $595, but it's current sale price is $297! If you'd like to purchase this, go to Hattie and Nan's TODAY on 14STW.
