OCCD 2023 Mini Series Recap: Makaylah Wheeler, Marshall Student, shares his OCCD experience

In a delightful conversation with Makaylah Wheeler, a student with an eye for adventure, we had the opportunity to dive into her favorite experiences at Old Central City Days and her insights about the significance of venturing off campus. Makaylah's passion for Central City, her childhood go-to spot, shines through as she shares her memories and suggestions to make the event even more captivating.

When asked about her favorite part of Old Central City Days, Makaylah expressed her love for the interactive butterfly tent. She found solace in this simple activity, especially after indulging in shopping at the various open shops. The butterfly tent offered a unique and free experience, allowing her to unwind and engage with nature.

Having lived just two minutes away from Central City for most of her life, Makaylah considered it a hidden gem in Huntington. Its always fascinated her, making it a go-to spot during her upbringing. Exploring the myriad of shops, she particularly cherished Village Antiques. “Upstairs in the back, there is a vintage closet. I used to love shopping there. I would waste hours,” she said.

Makaylah emphasized the importance of students venturing off campus and exploring places like Central City. She noticed a common misconception that Huntington only offers food places and bars, which are readily available near the campus. She also said, “I think escaping to locations like [Central City], would help a lot when it comes to destressing and battling the winter blues. It makes you appreciate a town.”

When asked about attractions in Central City that would interest students, Makaylah highlighted the modern and unique coffee shop and the Wild Ramp. However, she believed that students would truly fall in love with the area if they took the time to visit the shops and engage with the owners, who share fascinating stories about Huntington. She believes building those connections and embracing the local culture would undoubtedly enhance students' experiences.

Looking to the future, Makaylah eagerly expressed her desire to see the return of the beloved butterfly tent at Old Central City Days next year.

Makaylah believed that students would thoroughly enjoy Old Central City Days because it offers a refreshing and different summer activity. It provides an opportunity to escape the usual routine and indulge in the vibrant atmosphere of the event.
