What is an Air Plant

You may be wondering what an "air plant" is... well, you've come to the right place!  Air plants, which are also known by their botanical name Tillandsia, are epiphytes—which means they grow on a host plant for anchoring. (They absorb nutrients through little scale-like structures on the surface of the plants.) They aren't too difficult to care for and are low-maintenance house plants. There are two different types of air plants. Read about the two types here.

Caring for Air Plants

Air plants do not require soil, but don't let that scare you away! Water and air are the two essential ingredients for caring for air plants.  Watering methods for air plants include misting, soaking, or dunking. Misting involves spraying water onto the leaves using a plant mister. Soaking involves immersing the entire plant in water for about 20-30 minutes. Dunking involves quickly submerging the plant in water and then removing it. In general, according to Gardener's World, air plants should be watered every one to two weeks.
