Forward Head Posture

Forward Head Posture

Forward Head Syndrome is one of the most common and one of the most serious postural distortions. Old terminology for this condition was forward head translation.  The most recent terminology you may hear is Text Neck.  Because people have a tendency to spend their day looking down at their hand-held mobile devices/tablets, they are at greater risk than ever before for this severe condition. At Savage Chiropractic we understand Forward Head Syndrome.  We also understand how to bring your body back into balance and proper alignment.

It is estimated that young people, ages 8-18 years old, spend approximately eight hours a day on social media, which includes Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and so on. That amount of time is equivalent to full-time employment.  The greatest majority of their time is spent using a mobile device, cellular telephone or tablet.  As parents and grandparents, we need to start watching our loved ones for the signs of Forward Head Syndrome and get them treatment before the condition gets worse. Forward Head Syndrome occurs when the head shifts forward- typically as a result of a weakened or misaligned spine.  An average head weighs about ten to twelve pounds. It has been estimated that every inch of forward head posture can increase the weight of the head on the spine by an additional ten or so pounds. When the spine is out of alignment from trying to compensate from the heavy pulling of the head forward, the whole body suffers the consequences.

It is important to understand that where the head goes, the body will follow. In a typical Forward Head Syndrome case, the extra weight forward of the head will cause the shoulders to roll forward, the forward rolled shoulders will cause a sunken chest, and sunken chest can lead to a pelvic tilt.

Forward Head Syndrome leads to an increased strain on the upper back.  The forward head carriage can cause pain, headaches, and radiating symptoms down the arms.  It can also lead to serious respiratory complications by depleting lung capacity by as much as 30%.  The shortness of breath can lead to heart and blood disease. When the body hunches forward from the extra weight of the forward head, the entire gastrointestinal tract can be affected, particularly the large intestine. This can result in complications of bowel function may lead to toxic effects and disease in the body.   A person may experience heartburn, digestive problems, and irritable bowel symptoms.  Forward Head Syndrome has also been linked to early onset of arthritis, herniated discs, muscle strain, and irritation of nerves.
