Allergies
Weekly Newsletter
Over the past few weeks, the Weekly Newsletters focused on the function of the body and the benefits of chiropractic care. An expert chiropractor can provide a number of treatments to help in alleviating your allergies. All of the treatments work to reduce your current symptoms and lessen the impact that allergies have on you in the future.
Allergies affect approximately one in five Americans, according to the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America. This translates to about 60 million allergy sufferers in the United States.
What Are Allergies?
An allergy is a type of hypersensitive immune response to an allergen. An allergen is a type of substance that the body’s immune system views as threatening or foreign. Before the immune system overreacts to an allergen, it gradually builds a sensitivity to it. This means that it takes time for an allergy to develop.
The immune system uses this time to identify the offending allergen and remember it. It starts to create antibodies that work to fight against the allergen as it becomes sensitive to it. It can take just a few days or even many years for the body to become sensitive to an allergen.
Irritation and inflammation occur when the reaction to the allergen occurs. The exact symptoms a person experiences depends on the allergen. For example, the symptoms that can occur with a pollen or dust allergy include:
- -Stuffy Nose
- - Itchy Nose and Eyes
- -Swollen or Watery Eyes
- -Cough
- - Runny Nose
However, if someone has a food allergy, they can experience:
- -Vomiting
- -Diarrhea
- -Shortness of Breath
- -Swelling of the Face, Lips, and Throat
- -Tongue swelling
Other allergy types present with their own set of symptoms. Not everyone experiences all of the possible symptoms of an allergy.
What Your Chiropractor Can Do for Your Allergies
The primary reason to use chiropractic care for allergies is because this type of treatment helps to improve the immune system by bettering the central nervous system. A strong means of communication between the spinal cord and brain are important. Any interruptions between the two, such as those associated with neck misalignments, may lead to compromised immunity.
The most common treatment a chiropractor uses for allergies is alignment. Dr. Savage works to ensure the vertebrae of the spine are in proper alignment to prevent communication issues and subluxations. He may choose to align the vertebrae using his hands for a manual alignment or by using a small instrument to aid the process.
Regardless of technique, the end result is the same. Once the spine is in alignment, the body has the ability to heal itself. This helps to ensure it is not as vulnerable to the allergens that cause symptoms. Chiropractors also work to improve a patient’s general health, another important factor in the body being able to fight against allergens.
Allergies are very common and they can have a profound impact on your life.
Dr Savage understand this and he wants to help you get relief from your allergies so that you are comfortable throughout all four seasons.
