Palate Passion: Red Tea Garden Still Packs a Punch!
Column Courtesy of: Roy Elia
It seems like only yesterday when, as a mid-teen, I fell head over heels in love with Chinese food at Hong's Restaurant on North Columbia during a very special day.
The love was plentiful as our family was on hand at a wedding reception for my cousin, Dennis Lepiane.
I remember my father Dominick, witnessing his youngest son's craving for almond fried chicken, requesting that more of this popular item be ordered - a suggestion that resonated well with my tastebuds.
This establishment may have a different name than it had decades ago, but the Red Tea Garden still packs a punch when it comes to fine Milton-Freewater dining.
You know you're in for a deliciously good time when you walk in and are met by white-board-posted specials and a charming greeter that makes you feel welcome.
The special of choice on this dining adventure spotlighted an elite lineup of Egg Flour Soup, Pork Fried Rice, Kung Pao Chicken, Sweet and Sour Pork, and Fried Shrimp.
This meal was truly one of the best I've ever had. It had so many elements that make for a good plate of food including a delicate balance between warmth, crunch and taste.
The Egg Flour Soup provided the initial rise in temperature and what followed was a continuance of that characteristic.
The Pork Fried Rice, or any granular facsimile thereof, was and is adored by my palate; the Sweet and Sour Pork was free of any form of bitterness; and the Kung Pao Chicken was as tender as I've ever tasted and the vegetables and nuts provided the crunch.
Lastly, the Fried Shrimp stood at the ready to be dipped into one of two sauces - one for those who enjoy flavor and another that brings the heat.
For diners who choose the American route, no need to be discouraged. The Red Tea Garden offers steak and sandwich options too.
The Red Tea Garden is a Milton-Freewater establishment that I can enthusiastically recommend for your dining pleasure. Give 'em a try. You will not be disappointed.
