10 Things to do in Athens in a Weekend!

Art & Murals

A stroll downtown will lead you to some great works of art. The Golden Rule mural is the newest addition and also see the historical references of Athens at the Battle of Athens & Great American XX murals. Accompanying the murals, traffic control boxes have been covered with local artists work and our younger artists have painted their creative messages on stormwater drains.

Scavenger Hunt

Capture all the butterflies throughout the city! The butterfly scavenger hunt is an easy, on your own, style hunt where you check the clues and look for the butterflies on the exteriors of the locations, so you can join the fun at any time! After you complete the hunt, show off your pictures in Grandma's Gingerbread Bakery for a butterfly cookie, courtesy of Main Street Athens!

Scoop Loop

Athens is known for being the Home of the Worlds Best Ice Cream! Start the Scoop Loop with a tour of the Mayfield Dairy Farm or even just get a scoop and enjoy the rocking chairs on the porch. Athens has highlighted 7 locally owned ice cream shops to get a milkshake or ice cream. Pick up a passport at your first stop and collect all seven stamps for a sweet prize.

Live Music!

Every Friday night through August 30, a free concert is held at Market Park pavilion complete with food trucks and shaved ice. Bring your own chair and enjoy the Friendly City Festivals Sounds of Summer Concert Series.

Angela's Miami Grill hosts a wide range of music on the weekends to enjoy while sitting in the cool air conditioning. Try their signature Cuban Sandwich and a local craft beer!

History

The McMinn County Living Heritage Museum is a great stop to learn about local history and the interactive exhibits for kids will keep the entire family engaged. Check their calendar, many Saturdays they have special programming to enjoy.

A visit through the museum will pique your curiosity to hit the When Walls Talk Historic Walking Tour downtown. This walking tour has 32 plaques to see what the Friendly City looked like in the past to compare to present!

Outdoor Fun

Looking to get a little exercise in? The Eureka Trail is a perfect spot to walk or bike throughout the heat of the summer. The majority of the trail is canopied by trees to keep that summer sun at bay. Things to remember about the trail- the restrooms are located at the Athens trailhead!

The Athens Regional Park has great walking trails including the nature loop and the paved loop around the fishing pond. Be sure to follow the state regulations to fish in the pond while the park is open. Through September the splashpad is open from 10am to 8pm to enjoy. The splashpad is located right next to the playground so your little ones can be entertained for hours!

Athens Farmers Market

The Athens Farmers Market is a Tennessee producer's market which means all the products are made right here in Tennessee. Local artists, bakers, and growers will be seen at the Market Park pavilion on Saturdays from 9am-12pm.
