Sliced Bread Day Celebration
It's that time of year again to celebrate Chillicothe’s claim to fame, sliced bread! Baker Frank Bench and inventor Otto Rohwedder made history in 1928 when they sold the first commercially sliced bread to the world right here in Chillicothe. This year's annual celebration will be on Saturday, June 29th, 2024.
This year's celebration is jam-packed with fun activities to do with family and friends. Main Street Chillicothe is kicking off the festivities with a FREE concert at Silver Moon Plaza on Friday, June 28th from 7-10pm. Bring a chair and some friends and enjoy live music from local band, Branded Souls. Enjoy food and beverage choices from MOCOCO and Fresh on the Go. Webster Street will be closed from 6-10pm so come out and join us for a community celebration.
Celebration festivities will be located at the Grand River Historical Society Museum at 1401 Forest Drive, Silver Moon Plaza at 707 Webster Street, and The Home of Sliced Bread Welcome Center at 100 Elm Street. Park downtown and ride the new Sliced Bread Trolly! Route and trolly schedule will be posted on event day.
The Grand River Museum will host various events, such as a bread-baking contest, a slice-bread pageant, an innovations fair, and heritage exhibits. The downtown square will be bustling with activities such as the YMCA's 5K run at Silver Moon Plaza and the Farmer's Market at the courthouse square. Don’t forget to stop at your favorite downtown shop for your slice of a sweet deal! Businesses will have special Sliced Bread Day sales, with several businesses having sidewalk sales. In the afternoon, swing over to 1st and Elm Streets to experience the fun with the Sliced Bread Innovations team including bounce houses, face painting, The Rockin Rob Show, caricature artist, food trucks, and an interactive 4’X16’ mural where community members can help paint “Toasty’s Journey”. This interactive mural is presented by Main Street Chillicothe and is the debut project of The Main-iacs, a new student volunteer group working for the betterment of our downtown and our community. The festivities will culminate with the Slice of Home Concert presented by the Chillicothe Area Chamber of Commerce where local musicians take the stage and rock all your favorite tunes in the Blackwater Restaurant parking lot!
