Celebrating Women Entrepreneurs: Melissa Evans

Supporting the Arts and building relationships—both personally and between her patrons—is a priority for Melissa Evans, owner of Brix Wine & Whiskey and Brix Annex. “I want everyone to have a place to feel welcome and supported as they practice their comedy or music or just enjoy a great drink.”

Stylish and cozy, Brix Wine & Whiskey offers exciting wines, whiskey, live events, and famous Mulled Wine and Whiskey Sour Slushes. Brix Annex, previously Mason City Brewing at 28 E State Street, is the future home of Brix Wine & Whiskey and serves regional craft beers, ciders, seltzers, and mixed drinks.

Evans was new to North Iowa when she bought what is now Brix Wine & Whiskey at 107 S Delaware Ave. As she learned more about Mason City’s blooming art scene, her vision evolved.

“I wanted it to be more about events/artists and less about fancy drinks,” she said.

That vision has blossomed into live music and regular comedy nights where local comedians shine on stage.

“I’ve created a cozy, comfortable space that has seen many birthdays, showers, and first dates. I also have helped support many local artists and hope to continue to bring awareness to the local art scene.”

Evans is proud of the space she’s created and said Mason City has been very welcoming and supportive. She recommends aspiring entrepreneurs build relationships with other business owners. “Also, get in touch with Main Street Mason City, who can help guide you,” she said.
